In the operating cost of a plate and frame filter press, filter cloth is a continuous consumable. Frequent replacement not only increases material costs but also leads to production losses due to downtime. Therefore, proper use and maintenance are essential. Here are some practical tips to help you extend its lifespan.
Improper installation is one of the main causes of early damage. Ensure the filter cloth is flat and wrinkle-free, and that the cloth holes are precisely aligned with the feed holes of the filter plate. Any misalignment or folds can create localized stress under high pressure, leading to tearing. Also, check that the plate edges are smooth to avoid scratching the cloth.

After each cycle, remove the filter cake gently using proper tools—avoid sharp metal objects. Residual cake can harden and create uneven pressure points, damaging the cloth fibers. Regularly perform reverse washing with low-pressure water to remove embedded particles and restore permeability. Avoid using high-pressure water at close range, as it can damage the fiber structure.
For specific contaminants such as oils or organic materials, chemical cleaning is necessary. Use suitable cleaning agents based on the type of fouling, followed by thorough rinsing until neutral. Regular chemical maintenance helps dissolve blockages that water cleaning cannot remove, improving filtration performance.
During planned shutdowns, rinse the system with clean water after unloading to remove residual materials. Keep the filter cloth in a relaxed state—do not store it under pressure. Spare cloths should be cleaned, dried, and stored in a cool, dry, and shaded environment, away from heavy loads and corrosive chemicals.
Operators should inspect the filter cloth during each cycle. Check for small holes, loose seams, or sudden changes in filtrate clarity. Early detection and repair can prevent further damage and extend service life.
Extending filter cloth life requires proper use and regular maintenance. Attention to installation and cleaning details helps reduce costs and improve performance.
