What is Nonwoven Needle Fabric and What is It Used For?

What is nonwoven needle fabric, and what are its main applications? Bolian, a company with years of expertise in solid-liquid separation, explains:

Nonwoven needle fabric is a type of dry-laid nonwoven material. It is made by opening and carding short fibers to form a fiber net, which is then consolidated using needle punching. The barbed needles repeatedly pierce the fiber net, entangling the fibers and strengthening the structure to create the final fabric. Since it is nonwoven, there are no warp or weft yarns—fibers are randomly oriented, resulting in minimal directional performance difference.

Although it's a branch of nonwoven fabric, needle-punched fabric offers superior advantages. It features high tensile strength, low elongation, and excellent dimensional stability. By planting fiber pile into both sides of the base cloth, a fluffy and interwoven deep filtration structure is formed. The surface layer acts as a fine membrane filter layer, with uniform thickness and a compact structure, enabling precise surface filtration.

Needle-punched nonwoven fabric is also known for its outstanding chemical stability, high temperature resistance, and wear resistance, good moisture resistance, thermal dimensional stability, and excellent filtration performance. It can be blended with other high-temperature resistant fibers for improved cost performance. Besides being used as a solid-liquid separation medium for filter presses, it also finds application in geotextile membranes, embroidery cotton, garment padding, and Christmas crafts.

Key Features of Nonwoven Needle Fabric:

Lightweight
Made primarily from polypropylene material, it is fluffy and soft to the touch.

Softness
Moderately soft, offering a comfortable feel.

Water-repellent and Air Permeability
Excellent water repellency; highly porous, offering great air permeability, quick-drying, and easy to clean.

Antibacterial and Chemical Resistant
Polypropylene is chemically inert, resistant to insect infestation, and can block bacteria and insects in liquids. It resists alkaline corrosion and maintains strength even under chemical exposure.

With its superior mechanical strength, stability, and multi-functional performance, needle-punched nonwoven fabric has become a highly versatile material across industrial filtration.
